Summer Slurs
“We've had a few cases of racial comments here in one of our groups during the first week of camp. As we discuss consequences and action steps, we want to include education. Wondering if you had any suggestions (videos, articles, projects, etc) to use with campers, or maybe another approach to consider? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!”

“An unusually sensitive work about the racial barriers that still divide us in so many areas of life.” — Jonathan Kozol
Here are a few of our favorite things…
It’s been two years since Chanika and I co-facilitated our first webinar together. It was the start of a global pandemic. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others during 2020 had also forced the country to reconcile with the injustices that plague our systems. As educators, we set out to give folks a space to talk about how racism affects all of us.
Coming Full Circle
If you’re of a certain era, seeing the title of this blog entry might have sparked memories of The Lion King’s opening number. That’s good! Coming full circle should indeed remind us of the circle of life. :)
Discussing Identity, Equity, and Authenticity at Camp-Part 2
The goal of our equity work with camp professionals this summer has been to encourage the creation of spaces and places where commonalities and differences are respected, celebrated, affirmed, and deeply valued.

Discussing Identity, Equity, and Authenticity at Camp-Part 1
When it comes to talking openly and honestly about topics of race, sexuality, gender, and ability — among other aspects of identity — we all have room to grow, and there is no finish line that any of us will reach.

Happy Pride, Y’all!
"History isn't something you look back at and say it was inevitable, it happens because people make decisions that are sometimes very impulsive and of the moment, but those moments are cumulative realities."- Marsha P. Johnson
“I was a radical, a revolutionist. I am still a revolutionist…I am glad I was in the Stonewall riot. I remember when someone threw a Molotov cocktail, I thought, “My god, the revolution is here. The revolution is finally here!”- Sylvia Rivera
When Will It End?
For the victims of Columbine. For the victims of Sandy Hook. For the victims of the Las Vegas shooting in 2017. For the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016. For the victims of the Buffalo shooting on May 14th. For the victims of Robb Elementary School in Texas on May 24th. For all of us enraged and saddened that a list like this even exists.
Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Confirmation
“It has taken 232 years for a Black woman to be selected to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States,” Jackson said. “But we’ve made it. We’ve made it, all of us.”
International Women’s Day
It was almost a no-brainer that I would post March’s blog on International Women’s Day, lol. If you haven’t yet heard of Aimee Nezhukumatathil, I promise you’re in for a treat as we celebrate this day and the kinds of conversations Lance and I proudly get to have with partners across our global community.
Moving Forward
Chanika and I love to talk, and one of the things we value is that people tell us “how comfortable” we make conversations about race.
The Origin Story
Lance and I didn’t realize when we started this venture back in October 2020 that it would become anything worthy of a website launch, but our journey together actually started well before the height of a global pandemic.
